Founders and Directors of The Ledges

Dr. Vincent J. Arone
Psychologist
Executive Director

Dr. Arone founded The Ledges, a residential facility for the developmentally disabled, in 1960. With 40 years of experience in counseling and teaching developmentally disabled individuals, Dr. Arone has devoted his career to this field of expertise.

During the 1960's, Dr. Arone lectured at both Harvard and Boston University graduate schools. For 20 consecutive years, beginning in 1975, he served as president and chairman of the board of the Community Counseling Center of Blackstone Valley. From 1980 to 1996, Dr. Arone also served as a corporator of Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital.

Dr. Arone acquired a doctorate in psychology and a master's degree in counseling and special education from Boston University. He earned a bachelor's degree in English and social studies from Boston College.

He is a fellow and a diplomate for the American Board of Medical Psychotherapists and a member of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Arone is also a member of the board of Hopedale Charitable Foundation.

Vincent J. Arone, Jr.
Director of Operations and Admissions

Mr. Arone directs program development and implementation, interviews residential candidates and their families, and serves as campus liason to state agencies and the community.

Prior to assuming his position at The Ledges in 1977, Mr. Arone earned a master's degree in counseling psychology from Anna Maria College and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Boston College.

Mr. Arone is an active member of many professional associations, including the American Association on Mental Retardation, ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens) Massachusetts, the Greater Boston ARC, the Worcester Area ARC, the Massachusetts Council for Human Service Providers, and the alliance for the Mentally ill.

Nancy Arone
Director of Education

As Director of Education, Ms. Arone creates individualized learning programs for each resident, based on continual assessments of skill levels, intellectual needs, and personal goals. She also teaches, directs in-house teaching staff, and reviews community-based learning opportunities to ensure that each resident can make selections from a broad, yet focused, educational base.

Prior to joining The Ledges, Ms. Arone earned a master's degree in special needs teaching at Worcester State College, and a bachelor's degree in elementary and special education at Westfield State College. She also worked as a nurse's aid in direct patient care at Milford-Whitinsville Regional Hospital from 1972 to 1982.
